Dr. Biraj Sarkar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology, School of Health Science & Translational Research at Techno India University, Tripura. He holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Calcutta, an M.Sc. in Microbiology from Tripura University, and a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Microbiology from The University of Burdwan.\r\nDr. Sarkar’s research primarily focuses on Antibiotic Production, Symbiotic Formulation, Biodegradation and Bioremediation, Bacterial Systematics, and Antimicrobial Resistance. His doctoral work investigated novel polyisoprene-degrading actinomycetes from rubber-contaminated environments in Tripura—microbes that hold potential in both environmental sustainability and biotechnological innovation.\r\nWith over 3.5 years of academic and administrative experience, Dr. Sarkar combines teaching, research, and institutional leadership. Before joining TIUT, he served as Principal and Coordinator at the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS), ICFAI University, Tripura, and as Guest Faculty in the Department of Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics at Tripura University, where he guided postgraduate research in microbial genomics and biodegradation.\r\nDr. Sarkar has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals such as Scientific Reports, Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, RSC Advances, 3 Biotech, Archives of Microbiology, and Microbiology Resource Announcements. His scholarly contributions also include multiple book chapters for Springer and Elsevier, focusing on advances in microbiology, virology, and biotechnology.\r\nA recipient of the UGC-NET qualification (2016), Dr. Sarkar is adept in both classical and modern microbiological techniques, including whole-genome sequencing, phylogenetic analysis, antimicrobial profiling, and spectroscopic characterization. His ongoing research explores the interface between microbial ecology and therapeutic discovery, contributing to global efforts toward antimicrobial innovation and environmental sustainability.\r\nThrough his commitment to scientific research, experiential teaching, and mentorship, Dr. Biraj Sarkar exemplifies TIUT’s mission of advancing interdisciplinary knowledge and shaping skilled professionals who can address global health and environmental challenges.
